Aeroportuária durante o verão de 2024: A Europa supera a média global

During the summer of 2024, European airports operated with much greater activity compared to the same period the previous year. A growth trend that leads the Old Continent to accelerate compared to global data.

This is the conclusion that emerges from the analysis of data on the average daily hours of activity of airport service vehicles (GSE, Ground Support Equipment) carried out by the Targa Telematics Observatory, one of the main global players in the field of IoT and the development of digital solutions and platforms for connected mobility, with a strong focus on the digitalization of airport ground handling.

The total of 3.5 million connected assets managed by the IT company includes the share of service vehicles (such as Ground Power Units for aircraft, passenger buses, luggage trolleys, loading/unloading vehicles and towing vehicles, among others) that operate within the airport areas.

Specifically, if we consider the two months that most characterize the summer vacations - July and August 2024 - Europe has seen a significant increase in its airport activity, in the order of +5% compared to July 2023 and +4% compared to August 2023, respectively.

Overall, there was a 2.8% increase in July 2024 compared to the same period in 2023. In August this year, the situation remained practically unchanged compared to the previous year.

In turn, in an analysis of the second half of the year and according to INE - Instituto Nacional de Estatística (National Statistics Institute), Portuguese airport traffic was at an all-time high, surpassing the figures for the same period in 2023: 6.7 million passengers and 20.3 thousand tons of cargo and mail, corresponding to variations of +5.6% in passengers and +13.4% in tons of cargo and mail. These figures also boost the activity of the assets operating at national airports, whether trailers or other vehicles.

And the important role of airport activity in boosting Europe's economy and developing increasingly digital and sustainable cities has led Targa Telematics to recently become a member of the Aviation Services Association (ASA).
